The best time of year for dolphin watching in Puerto Escondido
Good news first: dolphins live off Puerto Escondido year-round, and they are spotted on more than 95% of our departures. There is no bad month for this tour. What changes through the year is the sea, the weather and the other animals you may see along the way.
November to March: peak season
This is the classic time to visit. Mornings are dry and sunny, the sea is usually at its calmest, and the dolphin pods are joined by migrating humpback whales. Humpbacks travel from colder northern waters to breed in the warm Mexican Pacific, and blows, tail slaps and full breaches become a regular bonus on the dolphin tour.
Because it is also high travel season, the sunrise boats fill up. Book a few days ahead, especially around Christmas, New Year and Easter.
April to June: warm, quiet and clear
The whales have mostly left, but the water is warm and visibility is excellent. These months often bring large pods of pantropical spotted dolphins and frequent manta and mobula ray sightings. Crowds are lighter than in winter, which makes this a sweet spot for many travelers.
July to October: green season
The rains arrive, the hills turn green and the town gets quieter. Rain on this coast usually falls in the afternoon or overnight, so the early morning tour often enjoys calm, clear conditions. This is also when sea turtle activity picks up as the nesting season gets going.
Occasionally a storm system brings big swell. If the port captain closes the bay for safety, your tour is rescheduled for free or fully refunded. Light rain alone does not cancel the trip, and some of the best dolphin mornings happen under soft gray skies.
Why every tour leaves at sunrise
Whatever the month, early morning is the golden hour for dolphin watching:
- The Pacific is at its flattest before the afternoon wind picks up.
- The pods are actively feeding, so they are easier to find.
- The low light is beautiful for photos, and it isn't hot yet.
That is why pickup is at 6:30 AM and the boats leave Bahía Principal around 7:00 AM. You are back on the beach in time for a late breakfast.
Month-by-month summary
- Nov–Mar: calm seas, dry mornings, dolphins plus humpback whales. Book ahead.
- Apr–Jun: warm water, great visibility, spotted dolphins and rays, fewer crowds.
- Jul–Oct: green season, calm mornings, more turtles, the quietest town.
